A thorough ADHD assessment consists of a series of interviews and questionnaires. These questionnaires can identify symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity and the tendency to be impulsive. They can also assess the effects of the symptoms on your life in different contexts. For example certain questionnaires ask questions about social interaction and how symptoms affect your relationships. The questionnaires can also be used to measure the severity of symptoms over a certain period of time, and in various settings, like at work or school. Some questionnaires are designed for children, while others are geared towards adults. For instance, the ASRS v1.1 adult questionnaire includes 18 questions that focus on symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. The questionnaires are based upon DSM V criteria and ask you to provide examples of how symptoms impact your life. To be diagnosed with ADHD, you must score at least six traits (symptoms). A meeting with your GP is the first step to getting an ADHD diagnosis. It is essential to openly communicate with your GP and describe how the symptoms affect your life. Keep a log of your symptoms, and their frequency. This will allow your GP to assess the severity of your problem. After having a consultation with a GP, you may choose to go through the NHS ADHD path or explore alternatives that are private. The NHS ADHD pathway requires a referral from your GP and wait time can be long. Some GPs, especially those with a high volume of patients, are reluctant to recommend a patient for ADHD evaluation. This can result in frustration and unnecessary delays.
